Brief

Virtual design collaboration competition to design a new building on Newcastle Quayside, taking the scheme from Concept Design to Handover in just 48 hours.

Details

Thirlwall Associates joined the Northern Ireland BIM Hub Team, a multidisciplinary group of SMEs and educational institutions.  The team collaborated remotely to produce an innovative design to BREEAM Excellent Standard that met the competition brief.

The landscape scheme incorporates the River Tyne – the brief asked that the river water played an integral part in the design, so some of the planting beds inundate at high tide to create areas of rare creek habitat. The landscape scheme reflects the strong design of the building and includes tree species able to tolerate the difficult site conditions.

As well as the landscape scheme Thirlwall Associates produced a site survey and analysis report to help the team understand the context of the site.

The team was awarded Best Use of BIM for Design, Drama and Excitement for the best architectural design and presentation.
